Printers are bullshit!

I wanted to print a few pages this other day. Just a few, simple pages. The printer gave me some of the pages, and then started to "print" only blank papers, and has done nothing since. My roomie is in a fight with her printer as well - she ordered new ink for it, but it refused to realise the ink even existed when she put it in.

All I can ever say to that is:

My Own Kind of Freedom

Author: Steven Brust
Genre: Sci fi
Rating: 4/5

My Own Kind of Freedom
is a short novel (about fifty pages from being a short story) that takes place in between the show Firefly and the film Serenity. Technically a fan fic, but written by a real author.

Haven't seen Firefly? Then what the eff are you waiting for man?

Brust
gets the feeling just right; reading his story actually feels like watching an episode of Firefly. All the characters got their own distinct mannerisms pinpointed exactly, often in a manner that makes you smile. Brust even lets the characters speak in Chinese sentences in all the right places, which is darn admirable! (Admittedly I don't know Chinese, so he could just be making up words as he goes.)

A must-read for any Firefly fan - totally unnecessary for everyone else.

Brisingr

Författare: Cristopher Paolini
Genre: Fantasy
Serie: Inheritance Cycle (nr. 3 av 4)
Betyg: 0/5

Reading the third book in line, I could not help but wonder why.

Why am I reading this?

Paolini's way of telling the story keeps bugging me immensely. Every single moment overflows with unnecessary details and stray thoughts. The details are probably meant to help creating a more diverse fantasy world, but they just don't. It causes irritation, because the plot comes to a complete halt every other page, for us to marvel at some boring banner, legend or feeling. As for feelings - although the constant complaints and general emoness of the main character is realistic, it is utterly annoying.

Brisingr
was supposed to be the last book in the 'trilogy', but it became too long so there are going to be four books. Maybe if Paolini did not feel the need to tell us of every single time his main character takes a bath, the trilogy would actually have consisted of three books?

1984

Författare: George Orwell
Genre: Dystopia
Betyg: 3/5

Published in 1949, this book portrays a future dystopia, where cameras watch your every step and troublemakers are quickly disposed of. The main character is a middle aged, middle class citizen. His job is to alter 'obsolete information' in newspapers, but he's got the nagging feeling that something must be amiss.

It is a harsh, cruel world that is revealed to the reader. Freedom of speech has not existed for a long time - freedom of thought barely does either. Love between family members is an exception to the rule; friends you do not have; constant war rages. The disturbing thing is that you do understand how they got there, and how easily we could end up with a world just like it. Orwell does a very good job, creating a scaringly credible dystopia.

As many other books, 1984 is divided inte different parts. My rating reflects what I thought about the first parts of the book. The last part was a bit too Clockword Orange for me. (Now, I love A Clockwork Orange, so don't get me wrong. It just felt kind of pointless, reading the same thing all over again.)

Saker som jag och min sambo tyckte olika om

Författare: Sabina Strand
Genre: Non-fiction
Betyg: 2/5

When Sabina Strand's partner dumped her (over the phone) two months after they moved in together... well, she wasn't thrilled. She started writing a blog about the relationship they had, and now that blog has turned into this book.

Saker som min sambo och jag tyckte olika om is almost without exception sarcastic. Strand's ironic rants about the ex are certain to make you smile a couple of times. Though I honestly believe they must have been better in a blogging context. Strand makes the unfortunate choice to paint a very one-sided picture of the ex, which after a while leads you to wonder how naive she must have been, continuing to date such an unsympathetic bastard.

Too much is about how heart-broken she was after he left her, how much she cried and how wonderful her friends were for being there for her. Frankly, I don't give a damn.

Batman & Son

Författare: Grant Morrison
Illustratörer: Andy Kubert, Jesse Delperdang and John Van Fleet
Betyg: 3/5

One of the more impressive scenes of Batman & Son is the one in which Batman fights a never-ending hoard of man-bats in a pop art gallery. The pop art pictures are used to illustrate many of the sound effects in a most humouristic way (a picture with a "WOW" speech bubble hanging over a gorgeous woman, for example).

Otherwise, Morrison's way to tell the story leaves a lot to wish for. Sometimes he lets a character seemingly imply something, never to bring the subject back up again. At other times Morrison completely drops a storyline and nothing is ever spoken of it again, as he starts a new arc. Talia al Ghul is the most tangible disappointment, as she acts very irrational and out of character.

Interestingly enough, Morrison has Alfred to read Artemis Fowl in one arc. Alfred ought to be at last 50 years too old for that.

Mystic Warrior

Författare: Tracy & Laura Hickman
Genre: Fantasy
Serie: The Bronze Canticles (nr. 1 av, hittills, 3 böcker)
Betyg: 3/5

Inanimate objects speak to Gaelen, and he is therefore shipped off with other "crazy" people to be executed. In another world a faerie is desperately seeking for a way to save her threatened people, and takes an interest in the fate of Gaelen. In yet another world, a lowly goblin finds a machine. It ticks.

Much more does not have time to happen in Mystic Warrior, since it is a very short book. The book would actually have benefited from being longer. As it is, there is simply too little material to create any long-lasting interest for the plot.

I recognize a lot of promise from the book though, as it at least tries to be original. I might read the next book in line one day, I just fail to feel very excited about it.

The Icewind Dale Trilogy

Författare: R.A. Salvatore
Genre: Fantasy
Serie: The Icewind Dale Trilogy (3 böcker)
Betyg: 2/5

The Icewind Dale Trilogy comes after the Dark Elf Trilogy from the same author, making it the second trilogy in order (although the first one to be written). It is not one of Salvatore's better trilogies, as far as I'm concerned.

The first book concentrates on introducing all the characters. It is done properly, but the plot suffers from it. Yawn. The trilogy does not gain momentum until its second book, Streams of Silver. The main plot is interesting, with the friends out on a quest to find the legendary Mithral Hall. Strange places are visited, evil monsters slain, epic weapons found - never a dull moment. The Halfling's Gem rounds everything up and the story ends. Pretty neat book, though not more nor less than you would expect. (Got the best cover art for sure.)

The Icewind Dale Trilogy is probably worth more if you read it after having read some of Salvatore's later works. That way, the story (especially the first book) may feel more interesting than it actually is. Having read later books you know Drizzt and his friends as full-fledged heroes - and to see them still in the beginning of their lives is... well, sweet.

American Psycho

Författare: Bret Easton Ellis
Genre: Psychological thriller
Betyg: 4/5

Patrick Bateman is a rich psychopath, living in uptown New York. In American Psycho we learn about his everyday life, from the competitive dinners with co-workers to the evenings in his apartment, where he tortures and kills unfortunates to cross his path.

(In)famous for its physical violence and crude sexual nature, American Psycho continues to entice readers. Way worse than the movie, the descriptions of Bateman's torture sessions grow very graphic over time. This book certainly should not be read by easily upset persons. Bateman is a detestable main character, and the people around him are not much better.

Common side effects of reading this book might include revulsion, nausea and a loss of your belief in humanity. A very good book indeed, that you might want to consider owning.

Dreamcatcher

Svensk titel: Drömfångare
Författare: Stephen King
Genre: Thriller
Betyg: 3/5

Four childhood friends - now grown men - go for a hunting trip and end up in the middle of an alien invasion. The aliens are actually symbiotic creatures, but humans being a faulty host for them, things take a nasty turn to blood and gore.

I saw the film first, and I must say the book and the film are close to identical. The book of course offers a much better medium for explaining the way the aliens are constructed and how the telepathy works. Another strenght of the book is the detailed characterization of all its characters - something you definitely do not get anything of in the film.

Overall though, the movie is a surprisingly exact re-telling of King's original story, and made me feel like I had read the book once already.

If you want depth, read the book. If you just want entertainment, go see the movie.

La nuit de l'erreur

Svensk titel: Den ödesdigra natten
Författare: Tahar Ben Jelloun
Betyg
: 2/5

La nuit de l'erreur
starts out very promising, with the mystery of an unmarked grave. A girl named Zina is born, destined to be a cursed woman, bringing destruction to the men around her. Completely void of empathy, she plays a dangerous game with the men she meet.

About 1/4 of the book is about how Zina grows up in Marocco - the author skillfully painting the picture of the city Tangier, with its rich culture and history ever-present. This part is written in first person from Zina's perspective - and truly interesting.

Then, Zina disappears. Instead of Zina we have to read about a bunch of depressed, middle aged men who's only concern in life is how meaningless life is and how devious and dangerous women are. Har the har.

Unfortunately my overall impression of La nuit de l'erreur was one of boredom.

Ender's Game

Författare: Orson Scott Card
Genre: Sci fi
Betyg: 4/5

Ender's Game is the harsh tale of a group of hyper intelligent children, bred solely for military use. Earth has been attacked by the same alien race twice already and the human race almost wiped out - the next war must be won. Which raises the question: How exactly do you fight against a race you know absolutely nothing about?

Ender's Game is amazingly well-written and thought-provoking. Not a sentence goes to waste. Orson Scott Card introduces his science fiction world with a calm certainity. Your prospect of alien lifeforms will change.

If you have not already read it I suggest you do, sci fi fan or not.

The Death Gate Cycle

Author: Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman
Genre: Fantasy
Series: The Death Gate Cycle (7 books)
Rating: 4½

This is original, high-quality, mind-blowing fantasy - the kind of fantasy you badly want to read but so seldom find. The same authors also gave out The Dragonlance Chronicles - a series that is widely known and a lot more famous than Death Gate, for some inexplicable reason. Don't get me wrong, Dragonlance is fine, but compared to Death Gate... nothing.

I can't give these books unbaised reviews. I am baised. I love these books.

To be perfectly honest though, the three last books are very disappointing. The first four books are awesome in every way and the story could easily have ended with Serpent Mage - leaving the Cycle at one book for each element and a horrible, foreboding open-to-interpretion ending. Take a second to think about it, when you finish Serpent Mage. It would be an excellent ending.

Note: I removed only half a star from the rating because of the three last books, because their existance is certainly no excuse not to read Death Gate!

The Legend of Drizzt Omnibus

Writer: Andrew Dabb
Illustrator: Tim Seeley
Original author: R.A. Salvatore
Rating: 4/5

The comic adaption of the Dark Elf Trilogy, describing the beginning of the drow Drizzt Do'Urden's life. Written under close supervision of Salvatore it is illustrated with a great care for details. And it is oh-so-pretty. I walk over to my bookcase just to pet it every now and then. Materialistic bliss at its best.

Batman by Brubaker

The Man Who Laughs

Story: Ed Brubaker
Illustrations: Doug Mahnke
Rating: 3/5

The first Batman comic I ever read, so bear with me. It is a very short one (under 70 pages) about the first time Gotham meets the Joker. Batman has been fighting evil for some time, but is still not a well-established super hero in the city. The intro of the story is excellent, as are the illustrations, but the ending feels a bit sudden and pointless.

Made of Wood

Story: Ed Brubaker
Illustrations: Patrick Zircher
Rating: 2/5

Another story by Brubaker in the same album, taking place several years later. A couple of unsolved murders that happened 50 years ago resurfaces and Batman takes help from the Green Lantern to solve them. Waaay too much of this storyline is about the Green Lantern, and he is a boring motherfucker of a super hero to be honest. If you, like me, lose interest for the plot, it sure is not worth it. I spent most of the story wondering why neither Batman nor the Green Lantern were old men, which they should have been after all this time(?)

A Man Without a Country

Svensk titel: En man utan land
Författare: Kurt Vonnegut
Genre: Novellsamling
Betyg: 3/5

By writing books like Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse-Five, Vonnegut guaranteed himself a lot of fame. For over fifty years he wrote about modern society with a dark, yet playful, sense of humor. A Man Without a Country is a collection of short stories that was published in 2005, making it the last book Vonnegut wrote before he died in 2007.

A Man Without a Country
is Vonnegut's take on life during the Bush regime and the ongoing oil crisis. It is nothing you have not heard before, and Vonnegut does the unforgivable mistake of mixing up Switzerland and Sweden in one of his short stories.

Still, his observations are relevant, his wit sharp and the collection an easy read. He rants a bit about people being stupid, but he does so with a shrug of his shoulders. 'I am an old man', he seems to say, 'If the world is fucked up... well, at least it is not my problem anymore.'

I can imagine him typing the last couple of sentences with a smile on his lips.

Sucka mitt hjärta men brist dock ej

Författare: Mark Levengood
Genre: Humor
Betyg: 3/5

A collection of short texts by Mark Levengood, a lot of them very entertaining in a homely sort of way. Levengood has an (according to me) unfortunate habit of getting overly philosophical sometimes, which ruins part of the collection. But when his goal is comedy, he delivers.

Divided Allegiance

Author: Elizabeth Moon
Genre: Fantasy
Series: The Deed of Paksenarrion (2nd of 3 books)
Rating: 1/5

It is over six years since I read the first book is this trilogy. It took me six years to get my ass over to the library and borrow the second part. And now I am sure it will take me another six years before I finish the trilogy.

E v e r y t h i n g   t a k e s   s u c h   a   l o n g   t i m e . . . The book is a million pages long and NOTHING happens. They talk and they talk and there are flashbacks to the first book and page after page explaining what happened in the first book in case you missed it and the main character is stuck in this unnecessary little village for FOREVER and then she t r a v e l s and then they talk some more and hey, neato, another flashback!

Lolita

Author: Vladimir Nabokov
Genre:
Rating: 3/5

Lolita is one of those famous classic books. It is famous because millions of people read it over the years and found it utterly disturbing. I can understand why.

Lolita is about this full-grown man who during his whole life is attracted to pre-teens, until he ultimately falls in love with 12-year-old Lolita. This is not the reason the book is disturbing. The disturbing part is that the whole book is written from the man's perspective, which makes the reader relate to him. You will find yourself cheering for him, thinking: 'Oh my god, just kiss her already!' And that, my friend, is disturbing.

Do not forget to take some French classes before reading Lolita, because Nabokov keeps putting in words and sometimes long long sentences completely in French. If you, like me, do not know French, you miss out.

Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception

Author: Eoin Colfer
Genre: Fantasy
Series: Artemis Fowl (4th of, so far, 6 books)
Rating: 2/5

The books about Artemis Fowl are adventurous, witty and clever. They are also for people younger than I am. My outmost recommendations to you who can still read books aimed at young people, then!

Oh, and did you by any chance know that "Eoin" is pronounced "Owen"?
Now you know.

Brilliance of the Moon

Svensk titel: Under lysande måne
Författare: Lian Hearn
Genre: Historical fantasy
Serie: Tales of the Otori (Sagan om klanen Otori) (nr. 3 av 3)
Betyg: 3/5

This is the third book in the Tales of the Otori trilogy. I will be honest right away and tell you than none of the two first books struck me as very exciting, and this one did not either. I don't know why exactly, but I am not intrigued by this. The trilogy has touch of 'fantasy' in it; a small amount of people have special powers. Other than that it takes place in a normal feudal Japan and is all about typical 17th century power struggles.

Lian Hearn
has my outmost respect for all the research he made on the time and place he set his story in, very admirable. And he never compromises with the story's setting in order to make his main characters look good. Authors often do the mistake of forcing modern standards on their heroes - even if the story takes place in the 17th century. Main character Otori Takeo is admittedly a bit less harsh than the others, but he still tortures his enemies, brutally slaughters their families and gets absolutely furious when his most beloved wife leaves the house without his permission. Good job Lian.

Ett tal till min systers bröllop

Author: Linda Skugge
Rating: 2/5

Ett tal till min systers bröllop left me feeling very upset - in the sense that I would pace around my room muttering things under my breath until I got depressed and pessimistic with the world. I don't know about you, but I don't like to feel that way over a mediocre book. Really.

The Black Magician Trilogy

Författare: Trudi Canavan
Genre: Fantasy
Serie: The Black Magician Trilogy (3 böcker)
Betyg: 4/5

Canavan's trilogy is about a world more or less run by magicians. Our main character is a mere street urchin, who surprisingly turns out to have great magical potential. So great in fact that she is not able to control it. The first book is all about the magicians' hunt for this girl, as they try to save the city from getting burnt to rubble by her renegade powers. The cool thing about this book is how there aren't any legible badguys. The main character is nice enough, the magicians mean well... and the no badguy thing is strangely refreshing.

I would say that The Novice is the weakest link in Canavan's trilogy. It is the typical boarding school story, you know the ingredients: the hero does not fit in, the teachers are unfair, there is this one student who is really mean to her, but that is okay because our hero has a nice mentor that she likes... It all gives you a bit of a Hogwarts-feeling. Unlike Harry Potter though, The Novice is not completely PG-13, thank god.

The strength of Canavan's trilogy are the constant twists and turns and an amount of unconventional material (ironically enough, fantasy is often very conservative, don't you agree?) Here we get gay male love and women who shag multiple partners, which feels extremely liberating in the genre.

Those lapses you get in personal judgement sometimes...

Linas kvällsbok 1&2

Författare: Emma Hamberg
Genre: Högstadieångest
Betyg: 1/5

Linas Kvällsbok 1 is a very typical example of Swedish junior highschool literature. Meaning the main character is a mousy-haired girl with small boobs and non-existant self esteem who whines about how she has never gotten kissed and everybody else is so cool boo-hoo. (I would not recommend it to people in its age group either - too little sex). Linas Kvällsbok 2 is a bit less typical, but... whatever.

Where Rainbows End

Svensk titel: Där regnbågen slutar
Författare: Cecilia Ahern
Genre: Chick lit
Betyg: 2/5

Where Rainbows End tells its story exclusively by the letters, mails, text messages (et cetera) that the main characters send to each other. Cecilia Ahern is good at taking advantage of this, leading to some pretty funny situations. Except from that little originality, the book is typical middleaged lady litterature and not much more than a book to read on the beach a sunny day.

Vägen till Jerusalem

Författare: Jan Guillou
Genre: Historisk roman
Serie: The Knight Templar (Crusades) (1st of 3 books)
Betyg: 3/5

Vägen till Jerusalem is the first book in Guillou's famous trilogy about the Swedish Crusaders. We get to know a little boy named Arn as he grows up at a monestary, whereafter he leaves it as a teenager. Totally oblivious about the viles of the outside world, he accidentally manages to get robbed, accused of murder and guilty of having 'dubious connections' with two different women. Poor little Arn...

Author Jan Guillou writes the book in an old-fashioned way and, seriously, the book is worth reading solely for the language. This is, in Swedish. If you are not Swedish or if you do not find templar knights to be very fascinating, you can skip it without a bad conscience.

The Orc King

Författare: R.A. Salvatore
Genre: Fantasy
Serie: Transitions (nr. 1 av 3)
Rating: 4/5

The Orc King is the first book in a brand new trilogy ('Transitions') by Forgotten Realms writer R.A. Salvatore. It starts where The Hunter's Blades trilogy ended - the orc invasion having been brutally crushed. The orc leader has started his own kingdom and intends for his people to live peacefully side by side with the dwarves... The other orcs are not amused. The dwarves most certainly aren't. So what now? Is the mere idea of orcs cooperating with other races that absurd? Well, uh... yeah.

The Orc King is a much needed trilogy in the fantasy world. At least I am pretty tired about orcs being utterly evil and stupid and hating everything and each other (honestly, how do they survive as a race?) Salvatore gives the orcs names, faces, heroes... hey, even women and children! I am looking forward to much on this subject in the upcoming Transitions books.

Orcs not your cup of tea? Then consider Drizzt Do'Urden and company, because they are in here as well, along with an epilouge set a hundred years into the future <--- way cool!

Eldest

Author: Christopher Paolini
Genre: Fantasy
Series: Inheritance Cycle (2nd of 4 books)
Rating: 2/5

When reading Eldest, I am constantly bugged about Paolini's way to write - probably because he makes the same mistakes I did, as a 12-year-old. The Swedish translation really does not help either - the guy who did the translation needs to choke on a sharp object. Eldest is awkwardly written and horribly predictible at times, but it still tells a good story and I will stick around for the third part as well.

Pet Sematary

Svensk titel: Jurtjyrkogården
Författare: Stephen King
Genre: Skräck
Betyg: 5/5

When the family cat Church gets run over by a truck, Louis finds an ancient burial ground and buries him there. The next day, Church is back. But Louis soon discovers that there is something slightly off about the cat, like it came back wrong... Soon after, Louis' own son also gets hit on the highway. And you can not just leave a dead toddler boy dead. Can you?

Stephen King is a brilliant author who delivers first-class suspense that will keep you looking over your shoulder for a while. Before you read Pet Sematary you might want to make sure there are no cats or toddlers in your house (if there are, lock them in the basement by night). It would be a waste not to read King's forewords first, since they add a certain "a-ha!"-feeling to a lot of details in the book.

Update: I recently watched the film version, from 1989. Very good, and not to be discarded as an option.
