Att läsa Wells klassiker är ett rätt tradigt arbete, måste sägas. Handlingen är inte speciellt cool, huvudpersonen är inte speciellt cool och tanken med marsianer som tar över världen är definitivt inte speciellt cool. Dessutom är meningarna ofta för långa (definition of "för långa": halva sidan) och klumpigt sammanfogade, så att man har glömt vad meningen egentligen handlade om när man väl läst till punkt. Kort sagt: Världarnas krig har inte åldrats bra.
Likväl har boken ändå sina ljusa stunder. Eftersom den är så gammal (1898) är den full av roliga ord och lustga uttryck. Vid ett tillfälle hör vår anonyme huvudkaraktär ett högt oljud, som han försöker beskriva. Han säger att det låter "like that of the thing called a siren in our manufacturing towns." Författaren förväntade sig tydligen inte att alla visste vad en siren var för något. Sött, eh?
Dessutom har jag alltid älskat slutet, som verkligen är genialt - kudos Wells!
Men vilken given dag som helst föredrar jag nog att se Steven Spielbergs film, framför att läsa boken.

My Own Kind of Freedom is a short novel (about fifty pages from being a short story) that takes place in between the show Firefly and the film Serenity. Technically a fan fic, but written by a real author.
Haven't seen Firefly? Then what the eff are you waiting for man?
Brust gets the feeling just right; reading his story actually feels like watching an episode of Firefly. All the characters got their own distinct mannerisms pinpointed exactly, often in a manner that makes you smile. Brust even lets the characters speak in Chinese sentences in all the right places, which is darn admirable! (Admittedly I don't know Chinese, so he could just be making up words as he goes.)
A must-read for any Firefly fan - totally unnecessary for everyone else.

Ender's Game is amazingly well-written and thought-provoking. Not a sentence goes to waste. Orson Scott Card introduces his science fiction world with a calm certainity. Your prospect of alien lifeforms will change.
